Locals advance to regional semis

ROSEBURG — Crater advanced seven wrestlers to semifinal matches on the opening day of the District 4 Regional Championships at Roseburg High Friday.

North Medford earned five semifinal berths and South Medford advanced three.

Action resumes today, with the top four finishers at each weight class advancing to the state tournament at Portland's Memorial Coliseum Feb. 28-March 1.

For the Comets in the quarterfinals, No. 2 seeds Jason Comer (145), Jerry Delafuente (160), Mike Rios (285) and Micah Walker (182) advanced to the semifinals. Also advancing were third-seeded Nate Walters (132), Tommy Winningham (152) and Cavin Gillispie (170).

For the Black Tornado in the quarterfinals, second-seeded Skyler Black (220) claimed a 16-8 major decision against Sheldon's Andru Johnson and Trenton Wilson (195) pinned Thurston's Zack Walker in 40 seconds. North Medford's Henry Cox (106), Caleb Dix (120) and Cole Hornbrook (138) each also scored first-period pins to advance to the semifinals.

South Medford's fifth-seeded heavyweight Dom Harris upset Roseburg's fourth-seeded Zack Caddock with a pin in 1 minute, 27 seconds in the quarterfinals. Fifth-seeded Brandon Brooks (170) earned a 14-0 major decision over Crater's Chase Bitterling then secured a semifinal berth with an 8-7 decision over No. 4 seed Isaac Hartwick of Roseburg. Brooks trailed 5-0 before rallying.

South Medford's second-seeded Anthony Neuenschwander (120) advanced to the semis with a 7-6 decision over North Medford's Tristan Lindi.

Roseburg leads the team competition with 195.5 points, ahead of Grants Pass (111.5) and Thurston (96.5).

Two of the biggest surprises of the first day involved forfeits by No. 1 seeds Chad Jones of Roseburg (126) and Wyatt Spears of Sheldon (285), who was the state runner-up last year. Neither wrestler met weight requirements.

5A REGIONALS — At Bend, Eagle Point had 13 wrestlers advance to the semifinals and Ashland had three at Bend High.

Action resumes today. The top four finishers at each weight class advance to the state tournament at Portland's Memorial Coliseum Feb. 28-March 1.

The Eagles lead the 10-school meet with 176.5 points. Churchill (120.5) is second and Bend (110) third.

Getting things going for the Eagles in the quarterfinals, Mikey Johnson earned a 13-10 decision over Springfield's Corbin Wasson at 106 pounds, while Christian Torrico (113) pinned Redmond's Jeremy Waldo in 29 seconds and Ivan Valle (113) won by fall over Mountain View's Chaunze Lancaster in 2:33.

Michael Hammond pinned Ashland's Lucien Farrow in 1:18 in the quarterfinals at 120, while No. 1 seed Levi Pomeroy (126) and No. 3 seed Eddie Perez-Rivera (126) easily advanced to the semifinals with pins.

Top-seeded Alek Callahan (132) pinned Ashland's Sydney Norvell in 17 seconds in the quarterfinals while third-seeded Eagles teammate Damian Gonzalez (132) also advanced with a pair of pins.

James McCoy, No. 1 at 152, secured a pair of first-period pins to move to the semis, as did top-seeded Hunter Hoeptner (160).

At 170, Sean Freeman pinned Mountain View's Keenan Springer in 5:09 before taking down Redmond's Parrish Bunker in the quarterfinals in 5:50. Blain Cloney (182) and top-seeded Ethan Pomeroy (195) also advanced with ease.

For Ashland, Mason Montgomery (220) pinned Bend's Jakob Larsen in 1:13 in the quarterfinals, while fellow No. 1 seed Cody Frost-Eisenberg (285) pinned Summit's John Murphy in 2:36. Also advancing to the semifinals for the Grizzlies was No. 3 seed Sam Gostnell (152), who pinned Bend's Dacoda Crane in 53 seconds.
