SPRINGFIELD — North Medford junior Lauren Hunter finished in first in the 50-yard freestyle and 100 backstroke to pace the local swimming results during preliminary action Friday at the Class 6A District 1 meet at Willamalane Parks Swim Center.
Hunter won the 50 free in 25.47 seconds and the 100 backstroke in 1:00.79.
South Medford senior Kaylee Cooper finished second in the 200 freestyle (2:02.01) and second in the 100 butterfly (1:02.33) in those preliminaries.
Action resumes today. District winners and those with qualifying times advance to the state championships, set for Feb. 21-22 at Mt. Hood Community College Aquatic Center in Gresham.
CLASS 4A/3A/2A/1A DISTRICT 4 — At North Bend, Cascade Christian's Breanna Sapienza and Phoenix's Ethan Shepherd each won two preliminary heats and cruised into today's finals in the district meet at North Bend Municipal Pool.
Sapienza, a six-time state champion, had the top time in the girls 50-yard freestyle and 100-yard butterfly. She won the free in 24.64 seconds and the fly in 55.63.
Shepherd took the boys 50 free in 23.50 and the 100 free in 52.93.
St. Mary's Alyse Darnall was the only other local individual to win a prelim heat, taking the 100 backstroke (1:03.27).
Two St. Mary's relay teams and one Phoenix squad had the fastest times.
The Crusaders' girls 200 medley relay won in 1:57.22, and its 200 free relay triumphed in 1:46.68.
The Pirate boys 200 free relay had the top time of 1:40.63.
