Gerald (Jerry) Smith passed away February 7, 2014 at his home in Medford, Ore. with family members present.
Gerald was 88 years old. A memorial service is planned for February 21, at 1:00 p.m. at the Assembly of God church in Central Point, Oregon located at 310 N. 10th. Street. Pastor Doug Gould will officiate.
He was born in Watson, Missouri on July 1, 1925 to Howard and Esther Smith. They moved to Longview, Washington where he attended Longview High School. He attended the Northwest Bible Academy in Seattle, Washington with his first wife Shirley. They moved to Southern Oregon and he went on to follow the ministry at the Reese Creek Gospel Mission. When he started at the Gospel Mission it had a membership of 13 people. When he left several years later it had grown to a membership of over 100. He also worked as a millwright for many years at several wood products facilities in the White City and Medford, Oregon area. He was active in many of the local sports leagues with the church and was largely responsible for starting the fast pitch softball league for the area.
He loved the life of a snowbird for many years with his wife, Betty. They loved to spend their winters in Southern California. They would then spend the summer months on the coast, Central Point and also in Central Oregon. He was fond of calling his children during the winter months and talking about how warm the weather was down there.
He is survived by loving wife Betty of 26 years; his son Jerry (Kelli); his daughters, Carol (Larry) and Cheryl; Betty's son, Bruce (Joyia); daughter, Christi (Robert); 15 grandchildren, and 20 great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his mother and father; brother, Gordon; son, Brad; and first wife, Shirley.
He will be interned at Cowlitz View Memorial Gardens in Kelso, Washington with his mother and father.
