North duo, South's Harris win titles

February 16, 2014

ROSEBURG — The race for team champion was a foregone conclusion but that doesn't mean there weren't a few surprises on the final day of wrestling at the Class 6A District 4 Regional Championships on Saturday.

As expected, Roseburg ran away with the team title by crowning eight champions to go with three runners-up to amass a whopping 512.5 points and easily outdistance runner-up Grants Pass (252). Overall, the Indians advanced 22 wrestlers to the state tournament in two weeks.

North Medford placed three wrestlers in the finals and registered two champions in 106-pounder Henry Cox and 195-pounder Trenton Wilson, while South Medford heavyweight Dom Harris may have supplied the regionals' biggest surprise when he earned a championship with a pin of Crater's Mike Rios in 1 minute, 36 seconds.

Overall, the Black Tornado secured five spots in the upcoming state tournament, with Cole Hornbrook finishing second at 138 to lead the way. Placing third for North Medford were Caleb Dix (120) and Skyler Black (220), who edged defending regional champion Willy Spears of Sheldon 3-1 in the third-place final.

For the Panthers, Brandon Brooks placed third at 170 thanks to a 14-13 win over Crater's Cavin Gillispie, while Anthony Neuenschwander finished fourth after falling 2-0 to Dix.

Harris, a No. 5 seed, took advantage of the absence of top-seeded Wyatt Spears of Sheldon, who was last year's state runner-up at heavyweight. After edging fourth-seeded Zack Caddock 11-8 in the quarterfinals, Harris pinned Tyler Dahlgren of Grants Pass in 32 seconds to earn his spot in the finals against the second-seeded Rios.

While Crater was unable to secure any individual titles, Nate Walters (132), Jason Comer (145) and Micah Walker (182) joined Rios in taking second, the Comets were able to advance seven wrestlers to the state tournament. Also advancing were Tommy Winningham (third at 152), Jerry Delafuente (fourth at 160) and Gillispie (170).

The marquee matchup Saturday involved Cox and Roseburg's Bennett Mesa at 106. The wrestlers came in ranked Nos. 1 and 2, respectively, in the state rankings and lived up to that hype with Cox scoring a narrow 8-7 victory in their first official meeting this season.

Grants Pass crowned three champions in Casey Coulter (113), Tyler Thomas (126) and Kjell Thorsen (152) and advanced eight wrestlers overall to the state tourney.
