Marie Callender's demolition begins

Marie Callender's Restaurant & Bakery on Biddle Road is being torn down after a blaze destroyed it on Dec. 14. Fire officials said the building, constructed in 1984, was not protected with an automatic sprinkler system. Marie Callender's opened in 1993. The building housed the Wild Plum restaurant in the years before.Bob Pennell

Demolition work has begun on what is left of Marie Callender's restaurant on Biddle Road.

Fire destroyed much of the building Dec. 14, but it took a few days for investigators to determine the cause — an electrical component failure.

J&A Food Service in Redding, Calif., later hired its own investigator to review the case. That job was completed earlier this month.

Pamela Fazio, a spokesperson for J&A Food Service, which operates more than 40 restaurant franchises in Northern California and Southern Oregon, said the demolition has begun in response to the city's request.

"Believe me if we could move faster than we are, we would," Fazio said. "We literally haven't got any assessment back from the insurance company. I get five or 10 calls a day asking, but we don't know."
