  • The third-ranked St. Mary's girls basketball team clinched the top seed in the Southern Cascade Hybrid with a 66-36 win over Lakeview in the league championship at St. Mary's High on Wednesday.
The Crusaders will next host a first-round Class 3A state playoff contest on Feb. 28.
Lillian Martin poured in 16 points, Emily Alvarez 15 points and Rose Alvarez 12 points for the Crusaders, who finished tied with the Honkers in the final SCH standings for first with 7-1 records.
St. Mary's (18-3) lost to Lakeview (14-9) 47-36 the last time the two teams met on Feb. 4, but beat the Honkers 67-39 in their first meeting on Jan. 17.
The difference on Wednesday was the Crusaders' use of a triangle-and-two defense to slow Lakeview's Delaney Hall (who had seven points) and Amanda Arcularius (who scored 11). Both had hurt St. Mary's before, but the extra attention on the pair made a difference, St. Mary's head coach Richard Vasey said.
The Crusaders led 18-7 after the first quarter and 33-14 by halftime.
"They didn't play well enough to win two weeks ago," Vasey said of his squad. "Coming into this game, the girls were as focused as they have ever been."
