  • The North Medford cheerleading team placed second in the Class 6A/5A state championships for the coed division last weekend.
    The Black Tornado scored 61.67 points, trailing only Thurston's 65.00. Cottage Grove was third with 59.58 points. Eagle Point placed seventh with 52.67 points.
    North scored highest in dance/choreography with 72.5 and 73 points in its two routines. It scored 59 and 58 points in tumbling/jumps and 57 and 56 in building skills.
    The Tornado's average was 62.67 points, but it was penalized one point.
    In the 6A small division, South Medford was ninth with 55.75 points, Crater was 11th with 52.58 and Grants Pass 12th with 50.83.
    In Class 3A, Cascade Christian was 11th with 39 points.
    PORTLAND — Former Crater High and Western Oregon University football standout Bryce Pelia has been added to the roster of the Portland Thunder, a new Arena Football League team that makes its season debut next month.
    Peila, a 5-foot-11, 202-pound defensive back, was a three-time all-Great Northwest Conference selection at safety. As a senior, he led the Wolves with 74 tackles and five interceptions and was chosen for the USA Freedom Bowl.
    As a junior, he had nine interceptions, tying for the lead in NCAA Division II.
    In a release, Thunder head coach Matthew Sauk said, "Bryce came into our private workouts in December and proved himself there. We're looking forward to him contributing to our defensive backfield."
    The Thunder opens play March 17 with a home game against the San Jose SaberCats in the Moda Center.
    Tickets are on sale for an appearance by the Oregon Ducks baseball team Harry & David Field on the March 24.
    The Ducks will practice at noon and stay for autographs and pictures.
