Sapienza cruises in prelims

February 22, 2014

GRESHAM — Cascade Christian's Breanna Sapienza is on pace to add to her cache of state titles, and the St. Mary's girls set a meet record in one relay and had the fastest time in another in preliminary races at the Class 4A/3A/2A/1A swimming state championships at Mount Hood Community College Friday.

Prelims were held for all divisions — classes 6A, 5A and 4A/3A/2A/1A. Finals are today.

Sapienza, a senior, posted the top times in her two individual events, the 50-yard freestyle and the 100 butterfly.

Her time in the 50 free was 24.72 seconds.

In the butterfly, Sapienza, who is headed to Vanderbilt on a swimming scholarship, went 55.34, more than six seconds faster than her nearest pursuer. She set the meet record of 54.63 in the event two years ago.

She has captured three state titles in the butterfly, two in the free. She added the 100 breaststroke crown to her take last season.

St. Mary's girls broke the meet record in the 200 medley relay with a time of 1:53.82. The team of Alyse Darnall, Andrea Dow, Olivia Dow and Grace Jovanovic bettered the previous record of 1:54.92 by Marist in 2009.

The same quartet posted the best time in the 200 free relay of 1:44.40.

Darnall competed for Phoenix last year and won the 100 free and was second in the 100 back. She also was on two winning relays.

On Friday, she posted the fastest time in the 100 free (53.63) and was third in the 100 back (1:00.96).

Crusaders teammate Jovanovic also made the finals in two events, with the No. 2 time in the 200 individual medley (2:12.07) and the fourth-best 100 breast time (1:09.32).

Olivia Dow, a freshman, was fifth in the 100 breast (1:10.09) to make the finals as well.

In the 4A/3A/2A/1A boys meet, Ethan Shepherd of Phoenix made two finals with a third in the 50 free (23.48) and a sixth in the 100 free (52.48).

He also was on the 200 free relay that registered the sixth-best prelim time of 1:36.34. Others on the unit were Aaron Heard, Taylor Brown and Nick Leiter.

St. Mary's Dan Huth was fifth in the 200 IM (2:05.33).

In the girls 6A meet, South Medford senior Kaylee Cooper landed a spot in the 200 free A finals (top six) with a fifth-place prelim finish (1:57.82). She was seventh in the 100 fly (59.48) and will swim in the B finals.

North Medford's Lauren Hunter will compete in a pair of B finals after claiming seventh in the 100 back (59.56) and 11th in the 50 free (25.31).

The top 12 places score in 6A, while the top six places garner points in the other classifications.

In 5A, Ashland's Cole Harding will compete in the finals of the 50 free and 500 free after prelim times of 22.98 and 4:59.32, respectively.
