Regional fire-prevention group wins runner-up prize

A Southern Oregon fire-prevention group has received national recognition for its efforts to prevent the spread of wildfires into urban areas.

The Rogue Valley Fire Prevention Cooperative received the runner-up prize in the 2013 Firewise Challenge contest. It will receive a $900 check to purchase tools and materials such as chainsaw chaps and work gloves, which will be loaned to communities performing wildfire mitigation work.

The co-op is an interagency, nonprofit group that encompasses the Applegate Valley, Seven Basins area, Greensprings and a portion of suburban Ashland designated as a wildfire hazard zone. It helps property owners plan and complete projects that would help keep wildfires from spreading into populated areas.
