SURPRISE, Ariz. — Kavin Keyes went 4-for-4 and Logan Ice drove in two runs to support starter Jake Thompson in a 3-2 win by fourth-ranked Oregon State over Washington Monday at Surprise Stadium.
OSU came from behind for the victory after the Huskies started the game's scoring with a solo run in the third.
The Beavers (6-2) started the fourth off slowly with Michael Conforto and Dylan Davis grounding out, but Keyes singled to keep the inning going. He then moved to third when Michael Howard singled.
That brought up Ice, who drove a 1-1 pitch to the gap in left-center field, enabling both Keyes and Howard to score. Billy King made it 3-1 when he singled to right, allowing Ice to come in from second.
Thompson, in just his second career start, went 62/3 innings to pick up the win and improve to 2-0. He was relieved by Kevin Flemer with a 1-1 count to Washington's (3-4-1) Austin Rei, a batter after walking Jack Meggs on four pitches. Prior to that, Thompson had retired 10 straight.
His walk to Meggs was just the second of the game and he finished his outing with two strikeouts and 91 pitches.
Flemer worked the next two innings before giving way to Max Engelbrekt. Chandler Eden, meanwhile, came on in relief of Engelbrekt after a UW single pushed the score to 3-2.
Washington's Tyler Davis (1-1) was tagged for seven hits and three runs in 42/3 innings of work. The right-hander struck out one and walked one before being relieved by Troy Rallings in the fifth.
Oregon State opens a four-game home series against Wright State on Friday.
