ASHLAND — The Southern Oregon University football team signed one of the most significant players of its 2014 recruiting class this week in Sherwood running back Keegan Lawrence, the Oregon Gatorade player of the year.
The Sherwood High standout joins 34 other high school seniors in the class.
The 6-foot, 190-pound running back averaged more than 17 yards per carry last fall, totaling 2,030 rushing yards and 31 touchdowns in leading the Bowmen to the Class 5A state championship game.
He was the Northwest Oregon Conference's offensive player of the year and a first-team all-state running back and defensive back.
Lawrence was the MVP of the state title game as a junior and also played on the state championship baseball team.
This year, he is a three-sport captain (including basketball) as well as a member of the National Honor Society and Fellowship of Christian Athletes.
He'll play for the North team in the Les Schwab Bowl on June 21 in Hillsboro.
