Spartans rally comes up short

MISSOULA, Mont. — Just after charging back from three-goals down, Missoula sank the Southern Oregon Spartans amateur hockey team's comeback bid on Thursday.

The Maulers' Matt Chamberlain broke the 3-all tie with less than three minutes to play to take down the Spartans 4-3 in the first of a three-game series at Glacier Ice Rink.

Cy Jenson squared the game at 3-all for the Spartans (12-28-2-2 Western States Hockey League) inside the 17th minute of the third period but Chamberlain took just 52 seconds to come up with a response.

The Maulers (16-22-4-0 WSHL) were up 3-0 until Austin Sartorius' goal with 40 seconds to go in the second period put the Spartans on the scoreboard. Nick Beaune netted an unassisted goal at the nine-minute mark of the third period for Southern Oregon.

Southern Oregon Spartans 0 1 2 — 3

Missoula Maulers 1 2 1 — 4
