Missing Medford man found by California Highway Patrol

A Medford man with Alzheimer's disease who drove away from his home Sunday morning has been found safe in Northern California, police said.

The California Highway Patrol notified Medford police at about 11:40 this morning that a trooper found 81-year-old George Watters on California Route 89, about 30 miles east of Mount Shasta City. His dark blue Buick LaSabre sedan was parked along the side of the road and he was disoriented, but otherwise in good health, police said.

Officers brought him back to Oregon, where he was reunited with his family, police said.

Watters, who no longer has a driver's license and hadn't driven in more than a year, drove away from his home on Medford's South Holly Street on Sunday morning. His wife reported him missing within hours of his departure and police said family members thought he wouldn't be able to find his way back home on his own.

He had been spotted around town Sunday and the Jackson County Sheriff Department's search and rescue team joined the search today.
