She attended Beloit College where a friend introduced her to James Lyon, a recent graduate of the Naval Academy. They were married in 1950 and Dawn followed her Naval officer husband around the world for 35 years. They had three children, Michael, Linda, and Bart. The family moved to Eagle Point, Ore. in 1973 and built a home in the mountains where James passed on in 1985.

Dawn loved swimming, gardening and her pets. She was active in much volunteer work and wrote a book on her life. Her faith in God and the Bible were very important to her. She loved spending time with her family.

All three children survive her, as well as five grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren. A memorial service will be held at 4:00 p.m. Saturday, March 8, 2014 at Eagle Point Community Bible Church. She will be laid to rest at Eagle Point National Cemetery with her husband.
