  • A student at the RCC/SOU Higher Education Center in Medford was taken to a local hospital Monday afternoon after she was hit by a glass panel that fell from the third-floor atrium to the lobby, an HEC administrator said.
There was no significant visible injury to the female student, said Jeanne Stallman, executive director of outreach and engagement programs, who arrived on scene after the panel fell. No other students requested medical attention, she said.
The glass panel was about 2 feet by 4 feet and is one of several that line the atrium above the third floor. It was made of tempered glass and broke into chunks, not shards, when it fell at about 4 p.m., she said.
"The atrium is cordoned off until we can assess the situation," she said. HEC facilities staff were on scene this afternoon and Adroit Construction, which helped build the center, will inspect the atrium today.
"At this point we have no idea why this particular panel fell," she said.
