Learn ways to protect your home from wildfire

The Oregon State University Extension Service helps Southern Oregon residents and fire agencies get ready for the summer fire season with a new Citizen Fire Academy. (Correction: The name of the university extension service has been corrected in this story.)

The Citizen Fire Academy, held in Jackson and Josephine counties, will teach about fire science, home protection strategies, fuel reduction techniques, risk evaluation, fire-adapted communities and emergency preparedness. Applications for the academy are now being accepted.

Sessions will be held from 1 to 5:30 p.m. each Tuesday from April 15 through June 3. The cost is $100, which includes all eight classes and resources. A sliding scale is available.

For more information, contact Rhianna Simes, Citizen Fire Academy's state coordinator, at 541-776-7371, ext. 211, or by email at Rhianna.simes@oregonstate.edu.
