    Four SOU tracksters start strong at Boxer Combined Event meet

  • FOREST GROVE — Southern Oregon University's track and field team kicked off the outdoor season Thursday with four individuals putting themselves in the hunt at Pacific University's Boxer Combined Event meet.
    After the first of two days at Lincoln Park Stadium, Amelia Maguin is third, Lauren McGowne fourth and Anna Reitman sixth out of 14 entrants in the heptathlon. On the men's side, Anthony Neal is sixth in the decathlon for the Raiders.
    Maguin (2,323 points) closed the day with a first-place finish in the 200-meter run (26.63 seconds) and earlier helped herself with a second-place showing in the 100-meter hurdles (15.86). McGowne (2,249 points) stayed in it by getting third in the hurdles (16.07), tying for third in the high jump (4 feet, 9 inches) and getting fifth in the 200 (28.38). Reitman (2,051) made her mark by claiming second in the 200 (27.60).
    The latter two were competing for the first time in track and field at the collegiate level. Maguin is a returning All-American.
    Clackamas Community College's Elizabeth Venzon leads, having totaled 2,532 points with first-place marks in the high jump (5-02 ) and the shot put (32-09 ). Linfield's Dallas Edge (2,360) is second.
    In the decathlon, Neal (2,917 points) kept himself relevant with the top mark in the high jump (6-01 ). George Fox's Ezekiel Smith (3,312) is in first place.
    Today's events start at 10 a.m. with the decathlon's 110-meter hurdles. The first heptathlon event, the long jump, starts at 11 a.m.
    Approximately 20 other Raiders will be opening their outdoor seasons at the Lane Community College Preview meet with six other teams. The meet will conclude Saturday.
