  • White City and Mountain View elementary schools will merge this fall as Table Rock Elementary School.
The Eagle Point School Board approved the name change at a board meeting Wednesday evening.
"We can see (the Table Rocks) from our window," Mountain View Principal Karina Rizo said, adding that the idea is to refer to the neighboring campuses as "upper" and "lower."
Third- through fifth-grade students will attend the upper (Mountain View) campus, while kindergartners through second-graders attend the lower (White City) campus.
The schools took suggestions for the name from parents, teachers and staff. Leadership teams from both schools narrowed the choices to three — Agate Desert Elementary, White Mountain Elementary and Table Rock Elementary — and then let teachers vote.
About 90 percent were in favor of Table Rock Elementary, Rizo said.
This week, the district will file the necessary paperwork with the Oregon Department of Education to make the name official, she added.
Students will participate in choosing the mascot, which will be presented to the School Board in April for approval.
"We want to let the kids know about the new name and mascot before they go home for summer vacation so they have something to look forward to in the fall," Rizo said.
The board voted in favor of the merger in January with the expectation that it would create a sense of community, balance class sizes, foster professional development among the teachers and remove the current no-boundary issue.
School ends June 6, and the move will take place the weekend of June 10-11. Renovations, including converting storage and locker rooms at Mountain View into three classrooms, will happen over the summer.
