Triple play helps Crater top defending champs

March 19, 2014

EUGENE — Crater senior Nolan Bastendorff was in prime form and the Comets pulled off a game-ending triple play to defeat defending Class 6A baseball state champion Sheldon 4-1 Tuesday.

The win avenged a 2-1 loss to the Irish in last year's quarterfinals.

Bastendorff struck out 12, walked one and scattered seven singles — most of the infield variety — to secure a season-opening road victory for the Comets.

"I was impressed with how sharp Nolan was this early on," said Comets head coach Jay Campbell, "he was pretty dominant on the mound."

Sheldon managed a 1-0 lead in the first inning before Crater tied it in the fourth when Gunnar Asher scored after an errant throw on Zach Lathrop's grounder to shortstop.

Crater went up for good in the fifth with one out when Tyler Aplin cranked the first home run of the season over the left field wall.

In the sixth, Tyler Plankenhorn and Blake Fahndrich supplied RBI singles to give the Comets a three-run advantage.

The game ended in dramatic fashion after Sheldon put two runners on base in the bottom of the seventh against Asher. David Bellamy followed with a liner that was snared in the air by first baseman Taylor Tibbets, who quickly tagged the runner retreating to first and then relayed a throw to get the lead runner at second base for the triple play.

"That's the first one I've ever seen in high school," said Campbell. "It was pretty neat."

Fahndrich finished 2-for-2 with one run and one RBI, while Aplin was 2-for-4 with one run and one RBI.

The Comets return to the Eugene area today with a single game against Thurston.
