CORVALLIS — Arizona State scored single runs in the ninth and 10th innings on Saturday to edge No. 4 Oregon State 3-2 in a Pacific-12 Conference game before a season-high crowd of 3,021 at Goss Stadium.
The loss snapped Oregon State's 11-game winning streak.
The Sun Devils (11-10 overall, 2-3 Pac-12 Conference) trailed 2-1 starting the ninth and were down to their last out when a double and single off starter Andrew Moore tied the game. They scored again in the 10th off reliever Scott Schultz to hand the Beavers (19-4, 4-1) their first defeat since a 6-2 loss to Wright State on March 1.
Moore scattered 10 hits as the Sun Devils had at least one baserunner in every inning except the second. He struck out five, walked one, and was helped defensively by a double play, a leaping catch of a line drive by first baseman Jerad Casper, and a caught stealing that helped extinguish a threat in the eighth inning.
Moore, however, was touched for the tying run in the ninth. He retired the first two batters, but Jake Peavyhouse doubled into the right-field corner for his third hit of the afternoon. Dalton Dinatale then grounded a single into right field to score Peavyhouse with the tying run, ending Moore's day.
Arizona State surged ahead 3-2 in the 10th on a leadoff single by Johnny Sewald, a sacrifice and RJ Ybarra's one-out RBI double off Schultz. Closer Ryan Burr then retired the Beavers in order for his fourth save to even the series at a game apiece. It was Oregon State's first extra-inning game this season.
The Beavers took a 1-0 lead in the first on consecutive singles by Andy Peterson, Michael Conforto and Dylan Davis off Arizona State starter Ryan Kellogg, who no-hit Oregon State at Goss Stadium last March. Arizona State tied the game in the fifth on a double by Peavyhouse, a sacrifice and Colby Woodmansee's RBI groundout.
Oregon State went back ahead 2-1 in the bottom of the fifth. With one out, Nick Rulli tripled into the right-field corner. Trever Morrison lined out, but Peterson roped a single into center field to drive in Rulli.
Moore battled to protect the lead and escaped a big jam in the eighth after one-out singles by Drew Stankiewicz and Nathaniel Causey put runners at first and second. Stankiewicz tried to take third on a pitch in the dirt but was gunned down by catcher Logan Ice for the second out, and Moore then retired Ybarra on a popper to second to preserve the 2-1 advantage.
Peterson had two hits, a run and an RBI, Rulli tripled, singled and scored and Davis had two singles and an RBI for the Beavers. They stranded six and did not advance a runner past first base in the final five innings.
The series concludes at 12:05 p.m. today at Goss Stadium. The probable starting pitchers are lefty Jace Fry (4-0, 1.58) for the Beavers and righty Darin Gillies (1-1, 4.94) for Arizona State.
OREGON 4, UTAH 1 — At Eugene, four Oregon pitchers combined to keep Utah from scoring an earned run for the second straight day as the Ducks beat the Utes at PK Park.
Freshman Matt Krook picked up his second straight win, allowing just one unearned run while striking out six in five innings. A day after being shut out by the Ducks, Utah scored a run in the first inning, with T.J. Bennett coming home thanks in part to an Oregon throwing error.
Bennett scored all the way from first when shortstop Mark Karaviotis threw the ball away trying to get Wyler Smith at first on an infield hit. Bennett advanced to third on the throw then scored when the Ducks failed to cover home plate.
Oregon took the lead in the bottom half of the inning. Aaron Payne led off with a double and scored on a triple by Tyler Baumgartner. Mitchell Tolman drove in Baumgartner with a sacrifice fly to left to give Oregon the lead for good.
The Ducks (16-5, 4-1 Pac-12) added two more runs in the seventh. J.B. Bryant started the rally with a single and moved to third on a Jack Kruger ground-rule double. Mark Karaviotis gave UO a 3-1 lead with a RBI ground out and Aaron Payne drove in Kruger with a base hit.
