  • Phyllis Aileen Smith passed away peacefully March 20, 2014 surrounded by her loving family. Phyllis was born January 18, 1926 in Medford, Ore. to Morey and Aileen Field.
    Phyllis was raised in Medford and attended Medford Senior High School. She attended the University of Oregon and was a member of the Pi Beta Phi sorority. After moving back to Medford she married Norton Smith. They raised three children and worked at the family business, Smith Building Specialties. She was a member of Junior Service League, Colony Club, and Book Club. Phyllis and Norton eventually retired to the Rogue Valley Manor where they split their time going to their beach house on the Oregon Coast.
    Phyllis loved the outdoors and being immersed in nature, especially at the Northern California and Oregon Coasts and the island of Maui. She loved gardening, greatly appreciated music and art, and was fortunate to have travelled extensively with her husband and many friends. Her home was always filled with love, laughter, family, and friends.
    Phyllis is survived by her husband of 66 years, Norton Smith; her sisters, Barbara Sherwood of Portland, Ore., and Moreen Newman of Sunnyvale, Calif. She was predeceased by her brother, Donald Field, who was missing in action off North Africa during WWII. She is survived by her daughters, Catherine Smith of Medford, Ore. and Elizabeth Zitzner of Jacksonville, Ore.; son, Donald Smith of Verona, N.J.; grandsons: Jesse Smith, of Portland, Ore., and Benjamin and Cameron Smith of Verona, N.J.; great-granddaughter, Kivrin of Portland, Ore.; she is sadly missed by her sons-in-law, Ben VanHulzen and Todd Zitzner; granddaughter-in-law, Ildiko Arndt Smith; sister-in-law, Joanne Leonard of Medford, Ore.; and brothers-in-law, Gordon Smith of Dallas, Texas and Morris Leonard of Medford, Ore.; and many nieces and nephews and her many friends.
    In lieu of flowers, the family requests a donation be made to the Rogue Valley Manor, Health Center.
