    ASHLAND INDEPENDENT FILM FESTIVAL: The 13th annual showcase of independent films starts today and runs through Monday, April 7, at the Varsity Theatre, 166 E. Main St.; Historic Ashland Armory, 208 Oak St.; Ashland Springs Hotel, 212 E. Main St.; and Ashland Street Cinemas, 1664 Ashland St. The festival lineup features 97 feature films, documentaries and shorts from Oregon and around the world, including a few Oscar nominees and winners. AIFF's Opening Night Bash will be at 7:30 p.m. at Ashland Springs Hotel. Tickets cost $30. Tickets are available from 9 a.m. to 10 p.m. at the Varsity Theatre.     MADE IN THE SHADE: Master Gardener Sherri Morgan will talk about the benefits and challenges of gardening in the shade, at a class from 7 to 9 p.m. at the Southern Oregon Research and Extension Center, 569 Hanley Road, Central Point.     PIANIST JACQUELINE SCHWAB will perform solo arrangements of tangos, waltzes, jigs and more at 7:30 p.m. in the choral studio on the second floor of the Music Building on the Southern Oregon University campus, 1250 Siskiyou Blvd., Ashland. She's performed on many of Ken Burns' PBS documentaries, at the White House for President Clinton, on NPR's "A Prairie Home Companion" and CBS' "Late Show with David Letterman."
