  • GOLD HILL — A second person has died from a Wednesday car crash near Gold Hill that police believe was caused by a reckless, impaired driver.
Jerry Vernon Barrett, 80, of Medford, died just before 10 p.m. Wednesday from injuries he suffered in the crash, which happened in the 3600 block of North River Road.
Grants Pass resident Joe David Campos, 40, who was a passenger in the vehicle that allegedly caused the crash, died at the scene.
Jackson County sheriff's officials say Lynda Mae Taylor, 32, of Grants Pass, was driving her red 2000 Kia Spectra recklessly when the crash occurred.
"Alcohol, drugs and excessive speed are believed to be factors," the Sheriff's Department said in a press release. Sheriff's officials declined to elaborate.
At about 1:15 p.m. Wednesday, Taylor lost control when she rounded a bend on North River Road, police said. Taylor's car slid sideways into the path of a 2000 Buick Park Avenue driven by Barrett.
Barrett was transported to Providence Medford Medical Center, where he died about nine hours later. Taylor was transported to Asante Rogue Regional Medical Center, where she remains in critical condition, hospital officials said Thursday.
A grand jury likely will hear a case against Taylor next week, police said.
The case remains under investigation. Detectives want to speak with anyone who talked to Taylor or Campos, or who saw Taylor's vehicle, in the hours leading up to the crash. Anyone with information is asked to call the Jackson County Sheriff's Department tip line at 541-774-8333.
