GRANTS PASS — South Medford's Kelsey Bartlett defeated Grants Pass' Natasha Matola, 6-0, 6-1, in a battle of top-seeded singles players to lead the Panthers to a 4-3 Southwest Conference girls tennis victory in cold and windy conditions at Grants Pass High Thursday.
South Medford (1-1) nearly claimed the No. 2 singles, but the Cavers' Amanda Solar outlasted Alex Moore, 6-4, 4-6 (10-8).
In No. 1 doubles, McKenna Stepherson and Abi Johnson of Grants Pass picked up a 6-0, 6-0 victory over Abi Borg and Rylee Houck.
With the Panthers' Anna Johnson leading Olivia DeJanbier 7-6 (7-5), the fourth-seeded singles match was suspended due to darkness before the second set could be played. The match did not count toward the team score.

Two of the three hits Phoenix (0-5) had were in the fifth inning and resulted in its run. Alyssa Wallack led off with a single and was sacrificed to second base. She scored on a single by Hailey Wyncoop.
