  • SPARKS, Nev. — The Crater Comet softball team won one game and lost two at the Reed Spring Break Tournament Friday.
Crater was no hit in a 10-0 opening-game loss to Spanish Springs, Nev., dropped a 6-0 decision to the Reno-area school Wooster then rallied for a 7-6 victory over Reno High. The length of all the games were determined by a time limit.
The Comets (2-5) were restricted to one hit in their first two losses. Crater's lone base hit came on Simone Smurzynski's single to lead off the fourth inning against Wooster.
"All and all we have to do a little more hitting to be successful here," said Crater coach Chris Arnold. "We have a lot of young hitters and they are building confidence."
Sydney Beck had two hits and three RBIs, including a walk-off single in the fifth inning against Reno High.
Crater trailed 6-5 entering the final frame. Smurzynski reached on an error to open the rally. After one out, Abbi Pearce was hit by a pitch and Val Meltzian loaded the bases on the seventh Reno error of the contest. Bri Doggett provided an RBI single to tie the score, then Beck's hit off the shortstop's glove ended the game.
"We put a lot of balls in play and they made some mistakes," said Arnold. "It was a good way to end the day."
Crater has two more tournament games today at 9:30 and 11 a.m.
