They're called put-and-take fisheries for a fairly obvious reason: State hatchery workers put catchable trout in lakes, ponds and streams so anglers can catch them and take them home.

And the best way to take some of these trout home is to know when they're put into area lakes.

That's why the Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife's summer trout-stocking schedule is must-read material for the thousands of trout-o-philes who want first crack at the rainbow trout stocked for their catching pleasure.

Of the tens of thousands of trout stocked from now through summer, all are at least 8 inches long — the minimum to be kept legally — and thus are labeled as "legals."

At various times and at certain water bodies, agency technicians will stock "large" trout, usually 12 to 14 inches long, along with legals.

"Trophy" trout are even larger, often broodstock used at places such as Cole Rivers Hatchery to produce the trout for release.

Most of the stocking schedule is self-evident. However, the area listed on the stocking schedule as "Rogue above Lost Creek Lake" refers to a series of spots along the far upper Rogue River and Union Creek within the Rogue River-Siskiyou National Forest, usually at campgrounds or near Forest Service bridges on those waterways.

The stocking schedule does not contain specific dates for when the fish will be released, just the week the release is planned.

The schedule is subject to change.
