PULLMAN, Wash. — The sixth-ranked Oregon State baseball team dropped a 4-1 decision to Washington State to open a three-game series Friday night at Bailey-Brayton Field.
The Beavers were handcuffed by Washington State starter Joe Pistorese, managing four hits off the left-hander. Two, however, came with two down in the ninth on a single by Gabe Clark and double by Logan Ice. Pistorese, however, got Caleb Hamilton to ground out to end the game.
The Beavers (25-7 overall, 9-4 Pac-12 Conference) matched a Washington State first-inning run when Hamilton drove in Clark with a single in the second. Clark had singled with two down in the inning.
OSU's Clark finished with two hits.
Ben Wetzler started and worked 51/3 innings and dropped to 6-1 on the year. He allowed six hits and four runs while recording three strikeouts with six walks.
OREGON 7, UC RIVERSIDE 2 — At Eugene, Oregon scored four runs in the third inning to break a scoreless tie and that was all Tommy Thorpe would need in leading the Ducks to a nonconference win at PK Park.
Thorpe (5-3) picked up the win with another solid night on the mound. The Ducks' lefty allowed one unearned run on just two hits while striking out seven and walking one in seven innings.
Kyle Garlick led the Ducks going 3-for-4 with two runs scored and a RBI, while Tyler Baumgartner was 2-for-4 with four RBIs and a run scored. Austin Grebeck added two hits in four at-bats and drove in a run.
Oregon and UC Riverside will meet in Game 2 of the series today at 2 p.m.
