SPRINGFIELD — Senior pitcher David Crofton was solid through seven innings and North Medford used a five-run fifth inning to pull away for a 9-3 triumph over Thurston in nonleague baseball Saturday.
Crofton allowed four hits and one walk in going the distance for the Black Tornado (10-1), with seven strikeouts and only one earned run.
"David had pretty good command of the strike zone and he forced contact and we made enough plays to get out of there and then score some runs," said North Medford head coach Brett Wolfe.
Brett Pearson led the charge for the Tornado by going 3-for-3 with one RBI.
Troy Fowler helped kickstart the five-run frame with a two-run double in the fifth and Jordan Ragan added a two-run single in the inning to answer Thurston after the Colts had trimmed their deficit to 3-2 through four innings.
Gauge Hallett smacked a solo home run to lead off the bottom of the first inning for Thurston (8-4).
Each team committed five errors, and seven of North Medford's runs were unearned.
The Black Tornado will host South Medford at 4:30 p.m. Tuesday to open Southern Oregon Hybrid play.
