  • Former North Medford softball standout Maryssa Becker has been named one of the top 25 finalists for the inaugural National Fastpitch Coaches Association Division I National Freshman of the Year trophy.
Becker, a pitcher and first baseman for the University of Louisville, leads the Cardinals in the circle with a 1.73 ERA and a 12-3 record. She also has a team-best 106 strikeouts in 109 1/3 innings and has recorded three saves.
The two-time Oregon state pitcher of the year also carries a .301 batting average with eight doubles and 19 RBIs.
Becker has twice earned American Athletic Conference Pitcher of the Week honors.
The NFCA list will be trimmed to the top 10 finalists on May 8, with the top three finalists announced on May 22. The winner will be announced during a live ceremony May 27 prior to the Women's College World Series in Oklahoma City.
Competing in the 6-and-under, 49-pound division, Central Point's Elijah Bayne scored four pins and a major decision to claim a championship recently at the Suplay Reno Worlds and become a Trinity Award winner.
Bayne improved his record to 56-0 with 39 pins at the tournament, which followed previous wins at the 2013 Suplay Kickoff last November and at the Suplay Tulsa Nationals in January.
Bayne, who is a first-grader at Jewett Elementary in Central Point, sealed the title in his latest tournament with a 9-1 major decision over Nikade Zinkin of California.
