  • Not much in the way of new lodging in Medford

  • For a while we were seeing new motels going up everywhere and even some remodels, like the Inn at the Commons downtown. Are there any new motels or hotels where my family can stay when they come up for Christmas?

Well, Tony, if you're looking for a spanking new operation in Medford you may be out of luck. But by all accounts the remodeled Inn at the Commons in downtown Medford would be a worthy place for the fam to hang out when they visit the Rogue Valley.
"The Inn at the Commons is where you want to go if you want a truly Medford experience," said Carolyn Hill, CEO of the Southern Oregon Visitors's Association and Travel Southern Oregon. "It's by the play structures on the Commons and by Hawthorne Park."
When it comes to new hotel/motel construction, however, there isn't a lot going on.
"What usually happens is a build-out with new construction and then demand catches up," Hill said. "We're in that little, tiny lull when we are catching up."
It's a generally true statement for all of Southern Oregon, she said.
"There's nothing new in Klamath Falls, Grants Pass or Jacksonville," Hill said. "People are buying (hospitality properties) and they are changing hands, but there's nothing new."
The exceptions are proposed condo-style rooms going into Irvine Vineyard's project at East Main Street and Lithia Way in Ashland, known as The Vine. According to the Irvine Vineyard website, the 13,800-square-foot building will include an eco-conscious, luxury boutique condo hotel, with (of course) a wine-tasting room.
