Police have arrested an 19-year-old man they believe was involved in the beating and stabbing of his 39-year-old Medford neighbor after being confronted about loud music Tuesday night.
Police have arrested Lucas Ivan Carstens, 19, no address given. Carstens is currently in the Jackson County Jail on charges of third- and fourth-degree assault. His bail is set at $29,000, jail records show.
Police say they aren't yet charging Carstens as the one who wielded the knife but added he was one of as many as six individuals involved in the assault.
"We can link him to being involved, but there were so many individuals there, we're not sure who the stabber was at this point," said Lt. Mike Budreau
The stabbing and assault happened around 10 p.m. in the 200 block of Elm Street. Prior to the incident, the 39-year-old man opened a window and asked those in the adjacent apartment to be quiet and turn the music down.
"There were several individuals associated with a particular apartment that the victim has noticed to be a continual problem with loud noise," Budreau said.
When nothing changed, the man came outside, where he was immediately jumped and assaulted by several people at the apartment. He was beaten and stabbed several times in the head and torso. The man was then taken to Providence Medford Medical Center by a neighbor who witnessed the assault. He underwent emergency surgery and is listed as "stable" by the hospital, though a condition was not available.
Police tracked Carstens to the corner of Eighth and Elm streets - about a block away from the assault - at 12:42 a.m. today and arrested him.
The assault is not believed to be gang-related. The investigation is ongoing, with more suspects still being sought. Anyone with additional information is asked to call Medford police at 541-770-4783.
