GRANTS PASS — Grants Pass softball pitcher Amy Robinson kept Crater off balance throughout and the Cavers used a three-run fourth inning to separate from the Comets for a 4-1 Southern Oregon Hybrid victory Tuesday.
Robinson limited Crater to three hits while striking out eight with no walks. Her lone run allowed came in the fifth after Brie Sheperd smacked a leadoff double and then moved to third on a drag bunt single by Athena Espinosa. Brittany Hassel followed with a squeeze bunt that GP opted to relay to first base for the out instead of trying to nab Sheperd at home.
"Amy Robinson did a fantastic job," said Crater head coach Chris Arnold. "She pitched to her locations really well today and she has such a great repertoire of pitches. We ended up watching too many strikes and chased balls outside the zone, which is exactly what pitchers want you to do. She really did a good job of working our hitters."
Abbi Pearce added the only other hit for Crater (3-9, 0-2 SOH).
For Grants Pass (9-6, 2-2), Robinson and Taylor Thomas each had two hits and an RBI.
Hassel struck out four with one walk and stranded five runners through four innings for the Comets, while reliever Tristin Fisher allowed one run on three hits in two innings.
