South dominates singles in win

The South Medford singles lineup demonstrated its potential in a 6-2 District 1 boys tennis home victory against North Medford on Tuesday.

Not only did the Panthers (7-3-2, 6-2 Dist. 1) sweep all four singles matches but collectively lost just two games.

"This is the best they've all played as a group this season," said South Medford coach Hal Borg. "That is our strongest singles lineup. When they're all playing well, they're dominate."

The schools split four matches in doubles, with North Medford registering wins in the top two spots led by No. 1 tandem Ryan Hogan and Kyle Campbell.

ASHLAND 7, GRANTS PASS 1 — At Grants Pass, Ashland won all but one singles match in nonleague action.

No. 1 singles player Grant Kahn downed Jonathan Williams, 7-6, 6-1, and the Grizzlies' top pairing of Cannon Dukes and Nate Baize rallied for a 3-6, 6-1, 10-6 victory over Nico Blanco and Drew Van Delden.

ST. MARY'S 4, NORTH BEND 4 — St. Mary's won three of the doubles matches in a dual against North Bend to forge the nonconference tie at Fichtner-Mainwaring Park.

Avery Kerwin, playing in the No. 1 spot, posted the Crusaders' lone singles victory, 7-6 (7-5), 6-2, over Jacob Gage.

Girls Tennis

SOUTH MEDFORD 5, NORTH MEDFORD 3 — South Medford swept in doubles and No. 1 singles player Kelsey Bartlett won in straight sets in District 1 action at North Medford High School.

Bartlett beat Hannah Von Strahl, 6-3, 6-1, for the Panthers' lone win in singles, while South Medford's top doubles pairing of Abi Borg and Andie Devries edged Madelyn Duer and Savannah Chambers, 6-3, 7-6 (7-5).

North Medford got singles wins from Kristina Ribeiro, Rachel Forrest and Bailey Cowen.

ASHLAND 5, GRANTS PASS 3 — At Ashland, Ashland won two singles matches and three doubles contests to capture the nonconference match at Hunter Park.

Ashley Knecht and River Davis prevailed in the top two singles matches, respectively, for the Grizzlies.

Knecht defeated Amanda Solar, 6-4, 6-2, and Davis downed Kelsey Lucido, 6-0, 6-1.

In the No. 1 doubles spot, Ashland's Hanna Greenberg and Vika O'Brien defeated McKenna Stephenson and Abi Johnson, 6-4, 6-2.

The Cougars also won the team title, finishing at 507 to top runner-up St. Mary's (532).

SKYLINE MEET — At Phoenix, Phoenix's Nevina De Luca won the 800 meters (2 minutes, 29.68 seconds) and 1,500 (5:18.09) and teammate Lindsey Burns took first in the 400 (1:02.27) and 300 hurdles (50.69).

Hidden Valley dominated on the boys side.

BROOKINGS-HARBOR TWILIGHT — At Brookings, Illinois Valley's Halona Jackson was first in the 100 meters (13.44 seconds) and 200 (27.88) and Rogue River's Keelie Worthington won the 100 hurdles (17.27) and 300 hurdles (49.60) at the eight-school meet.

The Bruins captured the boys and girls team titles.

Illinois Valley's Alex LaFlamme was victorious in the shot put with a throw of 29 feet, 71/2 inches. Rogue River's Skye Downhill had the top throw in the discus (95-7).

On the boys side, Rogue River's Rio Lopez won the 800 (2:10.11).
