Police stun suspected thief who threatens to cut his own throat

A Medford man who allegedly swiped a pack of cigarettes from the fuel center kiosk at Fred Meyer Thursday morning was subdued with a stun gun after he held a knife to his own throat when police showed up.

Mark Shane Johnston, 49, no address listed, was arrested by Medford police on theft and disorderly conduct charges. He was lodged in the Jackson County Jail on $6,000 bail.

Authorities responded to an alarm call at the north Medford Fred Meyer at 6:41 a.m. Johnston allegedly pilfered a cigarette pack from the booth by the gas pumps and started walking away. When employees confronted him, he did not offer payment and said he would pay them later, police said.

When police arrived and walked up to Johnston, the knife came out, police said.

"He pulls a knife, holds it to his throat, says, 'I'll do it,' " said Medford police Lt. Mike Budreau.

Officers subdued Johnston with a stun gun and arrested him.
