GRANTS PASS — Ashland senior Carter Glick had his no-hit bid broken up with two outs in the bottom of the seventh before pocketing his first shutout of the season as the Grizzlies stretched their winning streak to 14 games with a 5-0 nonleague win over Grants Pass on Thursday at Grants Pass High School.
Glick struck out eight without a walk and hit one batter in the second inning before retiring the next 16 to get within an out of his first no-hitter. He struck out the first two batters he faced in the seventh and was ahead 0-2 against Grants Pass' No. 3 hitter Easton Bents before Bents laced a single to left. Glick then got Cameron Mathews to ground out to second, securing Ashland's sixth road win in seven tries.
Freshman first baseman Nick Sanderson was 1-for-2 with a double, Max Montgomery 1-for-2 with two runs and an RBI and Bryce Rogan 1-for-3 with two runs to pace the Grizzlies (14-3).
Ashland scored the only run it would need on a second-inning balk by Grants Pass starting pitcher Ben Glaeser. The mistake plated Montgomery, who led off the inning with a walk.
Montgomery helped the Grizzlies tack on an insurance run in the third by drawing a bases-loaded walk.
Ashland's Aaron Scott singled home Rogan in the sixth to make it 3-0, and Ashland added two more in the seventh on another bases-loaded walk and a sacrifice fly by Jose Perez.
Glick's only misfire in the first six innings occurred when he plunked Drew Van Ess with one out in the second. Glick quickly redeemed himself, however, inducing the next batter into a 4-3 fielder's choice before picking off Hayden Chandler at first base to end the inning.
Grants Pass (4-14) has lost nine of its last 10.
