South Medford's boys tennis team picked a good time to start finishing strong.
The Panthers defeated visiting Grants Pass, 6-2, in their final District 1 dual match Tuesday before next week's district tournament. In doing so, South Medford (8-3-2, 7-2 Dist. 1) won three of the four matches that went to tiebreakers.
"In the first half of the season, we were losing every match that went to a tiebreaker," said Panthers coach Hal Borg. "In the last two weeks, the team has really started winning some of those close matches. The thing this dual match really shows is that our kids are starting to learn how to finish matches and win the close ones now."
Two of the overtime wins came in singles, where Mitch Steadman downed Nico Blanco, 7-6 (5), 4-6, 6-4, at No. 2, and John Killam topped Ben Widdison, 6-7 (5), 7-5, 6-1.
In doubles, JJ Quirarte and Noah Terando of South Medford defeated Nathan Trujillo and Jacob Guerra, 6-7 (8), 6-3, 7-5.
The SWC district tournament is May 15 at North Medford High School.
