  • Phillip Niel Sweet, 81, passed away peacefully in his home in White City, Ore. Sunday, May 4, 2014. Phil was born December 25, 1932 in Medford, Ore. to Marshall and Charlotte (Ludwig) Sweet. He lived nearly his entire life in the Rogue Valley.
    After graduating from Medford High School, Phil was drafted into the United States Army where he was assigned to the 3rd U.S. Infantry Regiment in Arlington, Va.
    Upon completion of his military service, he returned to school and received a Bachelor's degree in Education from Whitworth College. He later earned a Master's degree in Education from Southern Oregon College.
    Phil taught school for more than 30 years, including 26 years with the Central Point School District where he taught at Sams Valley Elementary and Scenic Junior High. He was also deeply involved with high school sports in the Rogue Valley where he spent more than 30 years as a football and basketball official and baseball umpire.
    Phil also enjoyed trout fishing in the many rivers and lakes of Southern Oregon and playing billiards, where he was a member of several championship teams.
    Phil is survived by his sons, Jeffrey Sweet of Eugene, Ore. and Gregory Sweet of Long Beach, Calif.; his granddaughters, Rachel and Rebecca Sweet of Eugene, Ore.; and his brother, Stanley Sweet of West Linn, Ore.
    A memorial service will be held at 1:00 p.m. Saturday, May 17, 2014 at the Conger-Morris Chapel, 800 S. Front Street, Central Point, OR. A private burial service will be held at Eagle Point National Cemetery.
    Due to Phil's lifelong love of animals and sports, in lieu of flowers, memorial contributions should be made to your local no-kill animal shelter or youth sports organization.
