  • Norman S. Balone, 85, passed away at home with his family around him Tuesday, April 29, 2014. He was born in Detroit, Mich. July 28, 1928 to Norman T. and Juliette Calmeyn Balone.
    Norm graduated from Detroit Institute of Technology in 1956 with a degree in Civil Engineering after which he began working for Bechtel in San Francisco, Calif. In 1962 he became registered as a professional engineer in California.
    His employment with Bechtel as Construction Superintendent in the Mining and Metals Division took him to many sites in the U.S. as well as to international locations. After nearly 30 years with Bechtel, Norm and his wife, Carol, retired to Ashland, Ore. where his family gathered over the years for many celebrations.
    Norm enjoyed building (and crashing) model airplanes, fishing, construction, golfing, and being with his grandchildren. He also volunteered with a meal delivery program for housebound adults.
    Norm is survived by his wife, Carol; daughters, Terri Wrightson (Steve) and Anne Maloney; and sons, Steve Balone and John Balone (Debbie); as well as 12 grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents; brother, Thomas J. Balone; and sister, Lynn Angel Covert.
    In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions can be made to Jackson County Animal Care and Control, 5595 S. Pacific Highway, Phoenix, OR 97535.
