ROSEBURG — North Medford's Daniel Schuler grabbed the opening-day lead at the Southwest Conference boys golf district tournament with a sensational 1-over-par 73 on Monday and, in doing so, helped the Black Tornado move into second place as a team in the two-day event.
Schuler scored two of his three birdies on the back nine to finish strong and carry a three-shot advantage over South Medford's Reese Fisher and Sheldon's Ben Wanichek into today's final round at Roseburg Country Club.
Fisher recovered from a triple bogey on the 16th hole to finish birdie-birdie and remain in contention for medalist honors.
The top two teams and the top three individuals not on those teams advance to the Class 6A state tournament.

5A DISTRICT 1 — At Redmond, Matt Hedges of Ashland shared the lead after Day 1 of the district tournament at Juniper Golf Club, shooting a 1-over-par 73.
Ashland fielded an incomplete team, but Hedges can qualify for the 5A state tournament if he places in the top five among individuals. The top two teams also advance after today's second round.
Hedges' round matched that of Ryan DeCastilhos of Bend.
Hedges made five birdies and six bogeys. Teammate Kyle Breeding shot 80.
Eagle Point turned in a team total of 330, led by Ethan DeVore's 77.

3A/2A/1A DISTRICT 6 — Dylan Wu, the defending state champion, shot a 6-under-par 66 to pull away from the field at Centennial Golf Club and lead St. Mary's to a season-low score of 292 on Day 1 of the two-day event.
The Crusaders, aiming for their fourth straight state championship, also got a 72 from Josh Wu and 77s from Jeremy Wu and Tom Thorndike. The team total was three off the school record they set last year.
Cascade Christian put up a fight with its own school record of 304. Jake and Ben Quast shot 71 and 73, respectively.
Illinois Valley scored 422, while Rogue River, Triad and Lakeview had incomplete teams.

MWL DISTRICT — At Eugene, Ashland's Mischa Kirby and Grant Kahn both advanced to the singles semifinals and qualified for the Class 5A state tournament in the first day of the league tournament.
Ashland is second to Marist in the team race, with the Spartans holding a 34-28 lead over the Grizzlies. Willamette is a distant third with 18.
The semifinals and championship matches will be held Friday at the Eugene Swim & Tennis Club.
MWL DISTRICT — At Ashland, Ashland took charge in the opening day of the Midwestern League district tournament, advancing two singles players and two doubles teams to Friday's semifinals.
Second-seeded Ashley Knecht won her first match in straight sets before advancing to the semis with a default victory. Knecht's teammate, third-seeded River Davis, used a pair of straight-set victories to qualify for the final four.
In doubles play, Ashland's Hanna Greenberg and Vika O'Brien, the two-time defending Class 5A state champions, did not lose a game in their two wins, while Ashland's Katy Barnard and Cass Christopher, the No. 4-seeded team, also won two matches in straight sets.
MWL semifinalists automatically qualify for the 5A state tournament. The league semifinals and championship matches will be held at the Eugene Swim & Tennis Club.
