  • Wayne Tinkle is expected to be announced as Oregon State's next men's basketball coach Monday, a source has told The Oregonian.
Tinkle, who was a finalist for the position with Syracuse assistant Mike Hopkins, has led Montana to three NCAA tournaments over the past half decade. The former Grizzlies star forward has spent his entire professional coaching career with his alma mater, compiling a 158-91 record since taking over for current Utah coach Larry Krystkowiak in 2006.
Tinkle won't walk into a completely foreign situation in Corvallis. Beavers assistant Freddie Owens spent four seasons under Tinkle before joining OSU last June. And director of player personnel Joe Kennedy, who joined the Beavers in August, is the son of former Tinkle boss Pat Kennedy. Tinkle coached under Kennedy at Montana from 2002 to 2004.
Tinkle takes over a program headed toward a rebuild. The Beavers have lost their five top scorers from a team that went 16-16 (8-10 Pac-12) and fell in the first round of the College Basketball Invitational.
OSU hasn't reached the NCAA tournament since 1990, the second longest March Madness drought of any big-conference mainstay. Tinkle's predecessor, Craig Robinson, was fired earlier this month after a six-year run included four CBI appearances and no NIT berths. He went94-105 (39-69 Pac-12) over that span.
Tinkle's son, Tres, is a standout forward at Missoula's Hellgate High. Rivals.com rates the three-star recruit as the 124th-best prospect in the Class of 2015.
