  • CORVALLIS — The St. Mary's boys golf team took a big step in their quest for a fourth straight Class 3A/2A/1A state championship Monday, shooting a season-best round to open the tournament at Trysting Tree Golf Club.
St. Mary's, getting 1-under-par rounds from co-leaders and brothers Dylan and Josh Wu, turned in a score of 291 and opened a 20-stroke lead on its nearest competitor, crosstown rival Cascade Christian.
The Crusaders are vying to become only the third school in Oregon history to win four straight titles. The other two were Medford in 1982 and Taft in 1987.
The team score bettered by one the 292 St. Mary's shot at the district tournament last week and is only two shots off the school record.
Among the Crusaders' goals was to shoot even par at state. They are 3 over heading into today's final round.
Dylan Wu, the defending state champion, got off to a sluggish start with bogeys on two of his first four holes, then birdied four of the next 10 to right the ship. A bogey at No. 16 was the only other blemish on the senior's card.
Josh Wu, a sophomore, had three birdies and two bogeys.
Senior Tom Thorndike shot 74, and sophomore Jeremy Wu had a 75.
Cascade Christian couldn't stay with St. Mary's, but the Challengers are comfortably in second place, 16 shots ahead of Catlin Gabel.
Brothers Jake and Ben Quast are tied for fifth place with 74s.
