EUGENE — Mail Tribune sports editor Tim Trower and several area coaches were honored at the Oregon Athletic Coaches Association annual awards banquet Saturday.
Crater football coach John Beck received the Dave Johnson Contributor Award, while coaches of the year for their respective sports and classes included North Medford softball coach Mike Mayben, Ashland girls tennis coach Gail Patton, Cascade Christian boys golf coach Ryan Allred, Cascade Christian boys track and field coach Chris George, Cascade Christian football coach Jon Gettman and St. Mary's girls swimming coach John Cooper.
Spring sports awards were for the 2012-13 school year.
Trower was presented the Media Award as recognition for 35 years of covering Oregon prep sports, the past 24 with the Mail Tribune.
Mayben guided the Black Tornado to a successful defense of the Class 6A state championship — its third in five years — and a 29-2 record.
Patton's Grizzlies won the 5A crown, their second state championship in history.
Allred's Crusaders claimed their third straight 3A/2A/1A state title, setting an all-classification record for margin of victory (77 strokes).
George directed a versatile Challengers squad to its first state title, racking up 85 team points.
Gettman's Cascade Christian unit garnered its first title since 2006, taking the 3A division with a 41-6 rout of Nyssa.
In its first year with a girls swim team, the Cooper-led St. Mary's squad won the 4A/3A/2A/1A state crown, setting two relay records in the process.
