  • North Medford senior shortstop Joci Ellis was named the Southern Oregon Hybrid player of the year and six other Black Tornado softball players made the first team.
    Ellis was also the 2012 league player of the year for North (24-2), which hosts Beaverton in the first round of the Class 6A state playoffs Monday. This year in conference play she batted .450 with a team-best 18 hits, 18 runs, seven stolen bases and two home runs. Ellis, who also had seven RBIs, will play at Yavapai College in Prescott, Ariz., with teammate Katie Ramsay next season. The Roughriders compete at the Division I level of the National Junior College Athletics Association in the Arizona Community College Athletics Conference.
    Grants Pass' Amy Robinson was given pitcher of the year honors and the Cavers' Donnie Bellum was awarded coach of the year.
    North pitcher Alexis Barkwell, catcher Ramsay, infielder Janelle Rodgers, outfielders Grace Jovanovic and Keisha Williams and utility Christina Kuykendall all landed spots on the first team.
    South Medford infielder Hannah Newman also earned first-team recognition.
