Emotions run high for local Memorial winners

Timbers 95G Red girls, Manchester United boys claim U19 trophies

Coach Kevin Primerano took his time walking off the pitch at U.S. Cellular Community Park on Monday afternoon.

His U19 Rogue Valley Timbers 95G Red girls squad had just claimed its second straight Rogue Memorial Challenge championship with a 1-0 victory over Bridlemile Soccer Club Portland 96G Black. Primerano's tight-knit cast of local high school standouts included seven seniors whom he coached for four full club seasons and whom he has known for even longer.

U19 FINALS

BOYS: Austin Schoenmann and Carter Ehlers net first-half goals as Rogue Valley Timbers Manchester United holds on to beat Medford United Futbol Club Mutiny, 2-1.

GIRLS: Amanda Hisey scores in the 14th minute to lift the defending champion Rogue Valley Timbers 95G Red squad to a 1-0 victory over Bridlemile Soccer Club Portland 96G Black.

Leaving the field meant saying goodbye, and Primerano was in no rush to do that.

"I just told the girls that I've been so happy to watch them grow up from little girls to young women," said Primerano, whose strong emotions could not be concealed even with the darkest of sunglasses. "I am extremely proud to play some role in that development. To see them conduct themselves the way they did on the field today was just incredible. It's bittersweet — sweet because we got the victory, and bitter because we're all moving on."

In the boys U19 championship, RVT Manchester United constructed a two-goal lead in the first half en route to a 2-1 triumph over Medford United Futbol Club Mutiny.

Behind the blank scoreboard near Field 10, Primerano gathered his club following the contest.

"I don't feel right keeping this one," Primerano said as he prepared to hand the trophy to Amanda Hisey, who scored the lone goal of the match in the 14th minute.

"Goal scorers are supposed to be prima donnas," continued Primerano, but not the Oregon Tech-bound Hisey, who was a star scorer at North Medford.

"She would dig a ditch," for the team if called upon, Primerano said.

She and the rest of the gang came through when it mattered most on Monday.

Goalkeepers Lexi Pittman and Jessica Weber combined for the shutout, backing up a stingy defense and midfield that included Tori Foy, Morgan Barry, Sydney Thomas, Facien Graham, Maci Jokumsen and Larissa Lakin.

"We just worked hard, practiced hard as a team and pulled it together for the championship win," said Hisey, who was also a member of the Primerano-led squad that captured the 2013 U19 crown.

Then there was Hisey, who switched to the defensive end in the second half.

"She is that player who is willing to do whatever it takes to help the team win," Primerano said.

Hisey is one of the seven seniors whom Primerano has worked with extensively. The others are Barry, Rachel Raniele, Renae Rivero and Chely Jimenez, as well as the injured Anna Smith and McKensie Ragan.

"I will be keeping an eye on all of them, making sure I bust their butts about their studies," Primerano added.

96G Red's win avenged a 1-0 loss to the Portland squad on Saturday.

"They are a solid team," 96G Black coach Jonathan Wilkins said. "We are a younger team playing up. They've got some serious talent and sometimes it doesn't flow your way."

Things also went the Rogue Valley's way in the boys final.

Man U, coming off a 1-0 victory over Los Pumas that evolved into a donnybrook with two ejections and a pivotal red card the night before, regrouped well on Monday.

Austin Schoenmann scored on a Jeff Turner assist in the 10th minute and Carter Ehlers netted a goal 10 minutes later to make it 2-0.

"We were emotionally really high after that win," Schoenmann said of Sunday's triumph over Los Pumas, which finished third. "We had to come down and calm down to play today's game."

Mutiny's Ezequiel Flores finished off a hard kick by Jairo Carillo after a goalie deflection around the 50th minute.

"I warned the boys against an emotional letdown and not to let that be your championship game," said Man U coach Scott Byrd of Sunday's dramatic affair. "I told them this is it. Don't have any regrets (and) leave it all on the field today. ... And they did. The other team bounced back and when they made it 2-1 it was a battle throughout."

Goalkeeper Joe Siordia conceded just the one goal all weekend long while logging every minute between the pipes for Man U, which went 4-0-1. Danny Zamores also played tough defense, Byrd added.
