The man suspected of slamming into another car while drunk and severely injuring a 2-year-old boy Saturday has been arraigned on assault and intoxicated driving charges.

Court records show 40-year-old Jon Allen Firehammer was arraigned in Jackson County Circuit Court Monday on second-degree and third-degree assault charges — both felonies — along with a misdemeanor charge of DUII and two counts of reckless endangerment. Firehammer, of O'Brien in Josephine County, remains in the Jackson County Jail on $250,000 bail, records show.

Firehammer is suspected of driving drunk in the 100 block of North River Road just after 7 p.m. Saturday when he lost control of his Dodge Dakota truck and swerved into the oncoming lane of traffic. He then slammed into a Ford Mustang traveling the other way.

Mustang driver Kaylene Streight was not hurt, but her 2-year-old son was injured. The toddler was first transported to Asante Rogue Regional Medical Center with serious injuries. He was then airlifted to Oregon Health & Science University in Portland. An update on the boy's condition was not available.

The Jackson County Sheriff's Department responded to the scene after a 7:10 p.m. 911 call and arrested Firehammer.

A preliminary hearing on the case is set for Monday, June 9, court records show.
