A driver suspected of being drunk when he slammed into another car and severely injured a 2-year-old boy Saturday has been arraigned on assault and intoxicated driving charges.

Court records show Jon Allen Firehammer, 40, was arraigned Monday in Jackson County Circuit Court on second-and third-degree assault charges — both felonies — along with a misdemeanor charge of DUII and two counts of reckless endangerment.

Firehammer, of O'Brien in Josephine County, remained in the Jackson County Jail Tuesday on $250,000 bail.

Firehammer was driving in the 100 block of North River Road just after 7 p.m. Saturday when he lost control of his Dodge Dakota truck and swerved into oncoming traffic, where he struck a Ford Mustang driven by Kaylene Streight.

Streight was not hurt, but her 2-year-old son was transported to Asante Rogue Regional Medical Center with serious injuries and then airlifted to Oregon Health & Science University in Portland. The boy's condition was not available Tuesday.

The Jackson County Sheriff's Department responded to the scene after a 7:10 p.m. 911 call and arrested Firehammer.

A preliminary hearing on the case is set for Monday, June 9, court records show.
