  • Phoenix's Interstate 5 southbound on-ramp will be closed Monday through Friday next week for the construction of a new, temporary ramp.
Work is estimated to wrap up Friday, June 13, Oregon Department of Transportation officials said in a news release.
During the closure, motorists who want to drive south on I-5 will need to take Highway 99 to Talent. Detours for commercial truck traffic, particularly from the Petro truck stop, will be longer, sending them north on Interstate 5 to Exit 27 to turn around and head south.
The construction of temporary ramps is the next phase in the $72 million Fern Valley interchange project. A temporary southbound off-ramp is set for construction the following week, officials said.
The Fern Valley interchange project is intended to turn exit 24 into a diverging diamond interchange, the first of its kind in Oregon. ODOT officials say the design moves traffic safely and more efficiently.
Following the construction of the temporary ramps, crews from Hamilton Construction will tackle the new interchange bridge, as well as the new on- and off-ramps, and roads.
