  • BEND — Simone Smurzynski bashed two home runs to lift Crater's 16U softball team to an 8-4 victory over the Oregon City Nightmare in the championship game of the Bend Summer Showdown Open Tournament on Sunday.
    Smurzynski nailed a two-run homer in the fourth inning and added a solo shot in the sixth. She finished 3-for-4 with three RBIs and three runs scored.
    The Comets went 5-1 in the tournament, which featured three games on Saturday and three on Sunday.
    Sydney Beck went 2-for-2 and drove in three runs while Tristin Fisher and Brittany Berryhill combined to limit the Nightmare to four hits. Fisher got the win, pitching five innings, and Berryhill got the nod for the final two.
