KLAMATH FALLS — Austin Zavala went 4-for-4, drove in three runs and scored three times to help the American Legion AAA Medford Mustangs claim its season opener in the first game of a doubleheader sweep over Klamath Falls.
The Mustangs (2-0) won by scores of 14-5 in Game 1 and 7-5 in the second game. They scored five runs in the first inning of both contests.
Zavala also had a pair of doubles in the opener, while Jared Evans went 2-for-4 with three RBIs and two runs scored. Christian Gillis had two hits as well and Josh Berman added a two-run single in top of the first inning.
In the nightcap, Evans went 2-for-4 and drove in a pair of runs. Micah Brown crossed home plate twice to go along with a 2-for-2 effort, and Eric Carlson went 2-for-4, scored once and plated a run.
The Mustangs' pitching was erratic in Game 2. Isaiah Luzny struck out six in three innings for the Mustangs but gave up a pair of third-inning runs on wild pitches.
Steen Fredrickson got three straight outs on the mound for the Mustangs in the bottom of the seventh after Klamath Falls loaded the bases and scored two runs with no outs.
