  • A Medford man faces robbery and assault charges for allegedly hitting a bicyclist with his pickup, then pepper-spraying the man before stealing his lottery ticket and driving away.
Aron Louis Brazil, 18, of the 300 block of Portland Avenue, Medford, is lodged in the Jackson County Jail on charges of first-degree robbery, first- and second-degree assault and failure to perform the duties of a driver to injured persons, jail records show. His bail is set at $3.01 million.
Medford police and paramedics were called to Steelhead Court and Corona Avenue for an injured bicyclist shortly after 11 p.m. Friday. They found a 43-year-old man had been struck by a red Ford F-150 that had fled, a Medford police news release said.
Police said the driver of the pickup covered his face with a cloth, got out of the truck, sprayed pepper spray on the man he had struck and stole a recently purchased lottery ticket.
The man sustained significant internal injuries from the assault, the release said. He was taken to Providence Medford Medical Center, but has since been sent home to recover, police reported.
On Monday, detectives found a red truck with damage consistent with hitting a bicyclist and interviewed its owner, Brazil, police said. Brazil confessed to the crime, saying he believed the man, whom he knew, would be carrying a large sum of cash, the release said.
No cash was stolen in the robbery and police don't believe drugs played a role in the crime, the release said.
